Sports anchor Roger Wallace had reported late Tuesday night via Twitter that a fire at the transmitter site was responsible for the outage. The station moved the broadcast of the Olympics to KBVO. KXAN's signal was fully restored by about 3 a.m.
KXAN General Manager Eric Lassberg later told Austin 360 TV columnist Dale Roe that there was no fire after all, and that an electrical failure interrupted the signal to mainly Time Warner Cable customers and those who watch the signal over the air.
Austin TV watchers have been tuning in to the Vancouver Olympics in large numbers. The Austin market was tied for 15th place nationwide with Providence, R.I., through eight days of competition, and was the only Texas market in the top 25.
