Volunteers are needed as the Austin/Travis homeless count gets underway from 4-10 p.m. The count is important to collect as much federal funding for Travis County's homeless service providers.
Volunteers will hit the streets to count the number of homeless men, women and children in Austin/Travis County. The more money the area receives for the homeless population, the better served they will be by the agency.
Council Member Laura Morrison said, “I look forward to volunteering for this year’s Austin/Travis County Homeless County. Hundreds of volunteers are needed to help collect critical information that will be used by local organizations to help our homeless leave the streets for a better life."
The count is conducted by Community Homeless Coalition (ECHO), a group of non-profit agencies and local governments working to end homelessness in the Austin/Travis County area. According to House the Homeless, there are approximately 4,400 homeless individuals in the Austin area.
"ECHO has set up a safe and effective way for volunteers to work in teams to survey streets, parks, campsites, bridges, underpasses and other public spaces. Participating in the Homeless Count will be a meaningful experience for all who volunteer,” said Morrison.
