On Monday morning, I ventured off to Sport Clips for an overdue haircut to return my hair to its shortened and clean-cut professional look. Sometimes I wait a week or two too long, and since I don't usually allow my hair to grow over my ears, it can begin to look pretty shabby. I don't often go to the same hair "stylist" as it were (where did all the barbers go?) and so no two haircuts look the same. But the goal is to go for something similar. That's what we expect.
But on Monday, the haircut headed south in a hurry, even though I explained in full detail what I wanted done. It came down to a number three clipper cut, a very small amount scissor cut off the top, and the usual trim around the ears and the back. By the time I looked up, a lot was gone and you can't put hair back, unfortunately.
I had great conversation with the woman who cut my hair. I asked for a little more blending, especially on the left side. She did, but when I left I just didn't feel satisfied.
I went back to another location later that evening and got my hair corrected. But, again, you can't put hair back and to correct a mistake, more hair has to be taken off.
I believe the bad haircut gods are cursing me. Perhaps it's because, after a co-worker made fun of yet another botched do weeks before, I made fun of his horrible mistake at the hands of - well, himself - and it was terrible. I jabbed at him for days, despite him only making fun of my haircut in one eight hour work shift.
I will never make fun of someone else's haircut, even if they do it themselves. Now I am looking for someone I trust who can be a permanent fixture in my haircutting needs. I've been recommended to several actual honest-to-goodness barbershops and I'm going to give them a whirl. I might have to pay more, as another co-worker pointed out. But perhaps it's the price I have to pay to get a haircut I can walk around being proud of instead of trying to hide my head everywhere I go.
