An Opinion on the Firing of Texas Tech Football Coach Mike Leach

John Salazar

by John Salazar

Knowing how Lubbock politics-- and West Texas in general-- operates, I find it hard to believe these allegations [player mistreatment of Adam James] were the sole reason for the termination [of head coach Mike Leach].

Leach was a Maverick, a Rebel and of course a Pirate. That was the demise of Coach Leach. Individuality is not a welcomed commodity in that closed minded, conservative community. That was Mike's curse from the get-go; being an individual.

For those that know how the High Plains operates, Lubbock loses a tremendous amount of creative talent. tatistics prove that whole region of the state is one big dying community, otorious for making bad business decisions. Anyone remember Texas Instruments leaving town just before the high-tech boom?

Bottom line, Leach was a victim of the 'good ole boy' system; a system that doesn't welcome anyone unwilling to fall in line with the 'good ole boy' politicking.
I never fell in line when I lived in that town. I'm a better man for leaving. So is Mike, along with his brand of Pirate football, sailing on a ship of individuality, far away from the most inhospitable land in the country.
