Children are like Dogs

Only 10 days remain until the birth of my son, and I'm surprisingly calm! Maybe it's all the preparation I've done - mental and physical (like getting the nursery all set up). Maybe it's all the other stuff in life taking my mind off what is possibly a true nerve wrecking time. But maybe it's honestly just that I've been so impatient the entire pregnancy and now that there's less than two weeks left, I'm not in such a hurry to end the DINK (dual income NO kids) phase of my life. Now we are going to be DIOKs!

From DINKS to DIOKS

I have been pouring through some pages of a book, mentioned in a previous post, where I am learning all about the psychology behind parenting. What I've discovered is that kids are like dogs. Just one part of that includes our hard-earned money going right to the dogs, and now kid. Today, I spent $65 at the pet store for a bag of food, a bag of rawhides, a box of "snaps" treats and another bag of medium sized bones. Sarah always considers it funny that I put a price tag on things. "I wouldn't pay but $10 for that." "75 bucks? Eh, I think it's worth 50."

Well, today, I think the things I bought were worth $40, but that was just the bag of food!

Trust me. As I've bought things for Luke, I wouldn't have wanted to spend that money on anything else! It brings me so much pleasure to buy things for him, and he isn't even here yet! And yes, it brings me pure pleasure to buy things for the dogs - my children of five years... my... (shudder) first born "kids."

So now that I am already used to buying things that are a little pricey, I've just been practicing for the real deal. Transitioning from DINKS to DIOKS won't be so bad, and I think I'm going to embrace it all - even the money part.

But I titled the post children are like dogs. Yes, they are, and not just where money is concerned. They're beasts who learn from the environment around them, and respond almost just like dogs! Isn't that great! I have raised two dogs. I guess I've made my mistakes with the dogs. For example, Barker has become a turd. (haha, sometimes)

He gets possessive about his treat ball, but we are learning how to transition him away from that attitude. Dogs also don't wait to go to bed. They do it when they feel it. They respond to their bodies and don't wait for the TV show to finish. They don't eat because they're depressed, at least not that I know of.

Hopefully all of this knowledge will come in handy in 10 days, or whenever my baby decides to arrive. He'll be making a lot of decisions for him and for us, and he won't even know it!

Bring it on DIOKs. I will be checking another box this year - when I turn 30 - and no longer identify with the 18-24 or 24-29 categories. I have had a long run being a SINK and then a DINK. I will always remember those days, but this chapter is about to begin and it's exciting. I just better stay calm like I am now and not be freaked out when it's happening.

Pictures to come FROM the delivery room!
