Brees sat down with CBS's Katie Couric recently to talk about his accomplishments, but more importantly, his involvement with a city he's embraced and a city that has really come to embrace him.
"The bond that our team shares with the city and everything that we've have been through together, I think it's built a very special relationship," Brees told Couric.
The fame hasn't come easily. Friends and former teammates say Brees has worked hard for everything he's accomplished. During his senior year in high school, Texas schools overlooked him during recruiting. He wound up at Purdue, finding his own niche and making a name for himself.
Standing six feet tall, Brees has been considered the underdog for most of his football career. That's no different now as his New Orleans Saints goes to the Superbowl for the first time in franchise history, taking on a team that's no stranger to the biggest day in professional football.
The New Orleans Saints seems to be the perfect fit for a man who takes on the role of a modern day saint. The New Orleans community embraces this hero because of the work he's done to restore the Big Easy. It's been anything but following Hurricane Katrina five years ago.
"We have a 1-year old son, and we're attached to this community now," Brees said. "We've made it our own, and we need to continue to help in whatever way that we can," said Brees to Couric.
His foundation, the Brees Dream Foundation, has raised nearly $2 million to rebuild parks, playgrounds and schools for the kids of the city.
Although Brees and his Saints aren't the favored team in the February 7th match up, he believes a win is totally possible. He says he's got fate backing the team up.
"I feel like we have destiny on our side," Brees said. "We have the strength of not only a city and a community but I feel like an entire country, that there's a piece of everyone who wants to see us win the Super Bowl," he said during his interview with Couric.
Read more on Couric's interview with Brees, including how Peyton Manning's dad, Archie, who has a long history with the Saints, approached Brees about this game.
