The United States ranks number seven on the list of countries with the highest amount of property crime. Of that statistic, the U.S. is number one when it comes to car theft, with 1.2 million incidents reported. In comparison, the United Kingdom comes in second with more than 348,000 incidents reported, according to NationMaster.com.
This week, State Farm Insurance is raising awareness of vehicle theft with a sign that says, "Where You Are, Care Thieves Are." It was unveiled Monday on the side of the Austin Police Department headquarters, 715 E. 8th Street, and hangs on the east-facing wall of APD's headquarters so drivers on I-35 may see it as they pass by.
Every year, thousands of Texans become the victim of vehicle-related crimes, according to the Austin Police Department, whose officers say the crimes can happen at any time. "Most of these crimes are preventable," Sgt. Oliver Tate said. "If drivers would take a few extra moments to hide their belongings, lock their vehicles and take their keys, they would lessen their chances of [becoming a victim]."
As a result, State Farm agent Rich Watson said vehicle theft crimes increase the cost of insurance for everyone in the state. "Taking a few small steps to protect your vehicle and its belongings may save you money and headaches down the road," said Watson.
To minimize the risk of becoming a victim, State Farm and APD recommend you
follow these tips to prevent vehicle-related crimes:
1. Always close your windows and lock your doors.
2. Park in well-lit and secure areas.
3. Conceal valuable items and place large packages in the trunk.
4. Always be aware of your surroundings and call the police to report suspicious
5. Install warning devices such as audible alarms and decals.
