Oh, the pain! I am the first to admit, and in fact did this week to my wife, that I'm so glad I'll never be pregnant. I couldn't take it. I can't handle whatever it was I had this week. I never had a sore throat or coughs, but I did have a very high fever, night sweats (all night long for three or four nights), aching muscles and severe weakness.
It all probably started before my big trip to Houston this past week to cover the Bill White watch party at the InterContinental Hotel. Bill White won the democratic party nomination to run for governor against Republican opponent Rick Perry in this fall's general election.
I was pumped to go. I packed my bags, and probably my illness too, for the road trip with photographer Matt Olsen. That day I felt in decent shape, with a hint of that sick-like feeling, but chalked it up to excitement over covering the watch party. We got through the early hours fine, and even the latter hours and our 10 p.m. crunch that left us editing like crazy. Thanks to Louis, KTRK-TV's satellite truck operator for making the day very smooth! By the finish line, our empty stomach's begged for food, and so we went to grab some. Although delicious and spot hitting, by the end of the meal I rattled all over with a ferocious chill. The hotel room summoned me, where I cranked the heater to 78 degrees and immediately hid myself under the layers of plush, comfortable hotel covers.
At 3 a.m. I awoke to a relieving sweat, thinking my illness had passed. I felt decent on Wednesday for the drive back and even when we walked in the backdoor to the newsroom. Little did I realize that the pain had just started. I got the rest of the day off, and settled in at home for a nice afternoon nap. It was epic, and satisfying, but woke up in the fetal position. Things didn't improve much for the next two days, and on Friday I went to see the doc. He didn't explain much to me and scribbled out a prescription for an antibiotic.
Here it is, Sunday, and after arriving back home from an on-call shift I had to fill at work, I am feeling tremendously better from the middle of last week, when all I wanted to do was die. But here's to life and all it's wonderful offerings!
Speaking of which, I'd like to thank my wonderful wife, Sarah, for the work she's provided for The Austin Citysphere during the time I couldn't even think about the internet. She's kept you up to speed on all things Austin, and this week I'm hoping to jump back in the saddle with some new offerings of my own, both in audio and video form. Keep looking for great content on ACS. It's just a two person crew that keeps this going, along with contributions from some great local writers tossed in the mix. We appreciate every effort you make to put us on the map, and I beg of you to tell all your friends about it, too!
Here's to health, happiness, and above all... laughter! (I'm so Bohemian).
