Google Project Gets Austin's Attention

The city of Austin is in a running for a big time project being put on by internet giant Google.

The company with a funny name but a serious business attitude is looking for cities to place experimental ultra high-speed fiber networks, providing faster internet up to 100 times to people living in those cities.

Apparently citizen nominations are vital to the success of any given city vying for the award, with one city garnering 30,000 private nominations.  Google is expected to choose a total of 50,000-500,000 households to connect.  Hundreds of cities in the U.S. are applying, including Austin.

City leaders are asking for your nod.  Nominations for the "Fiber for Communities" project will end on Friday, March 26, at 5 p.m.

Other cities in central Texas may also be entering, such as Cedar Park and Round Rock.  Go here to learn more about the project and how to nominate your favorite city.
