Rare Copy of Declaration of Independence Showcased in Austin

A rare copy of the U.S. Declaration of Independence is making a stop at Anderson High School in Austin this evening.

The document is one of only 25 surviving copies of a rare broadside of the Declaration of Independence.  There were originally 200 copies of the broadside printed on the evening of July 4, 1776 in John Dunlap's Philadelphia print shop.  The copies were then distributed among the 13 colonies and the militia to be read aloud.  In fact, these broadsides are older than the handwritten copy of the Declaration of Independence housed at the National Archives in Washington, D.C.

There will be a free public viewing open to the community from 5 to 7 p.m.  Anderson High School is located at 8403 Mesa Drive in Northwest Austin.
