The survey examined data collected between February and June of last year. Locally, Capital Area Food Bank conducted interviews with 354 people seeking food at pantries, soup kitchens and other emergency feeding programs, and more than 257 agencies providing food assistance.
The Hunger in America 2010 survey was the largest, most comprehensive study ever conducted on domestic hunger. The nation-wide survey collected feedback from 61,000 face-to-face interviews with people in need of emergency food assistance. More than 37,000 agencies were interviewed.
"With knowledge comes responsibility,” said David Davenport, CAFB President & CEO. “A rising number of our neighbors are seeking emergency food assistance and are forced to make choices between food and other basic necessities, such as utilities, rent and medical care. This is unacceptable. Hunger is unacceptable.”
The local results will be released February 3rd at 9:30 a.m. on the Capital Area Food Bank's website, at austinfoodbank.org.
Capital Area Food Bank is currently running the Souper Bowl of Caring food drive, in conjuction with local media outlets, H-E-B, Central Market and Randalls. You can pick up a pre-packaged bag of food at one of these retailers to donate to Capital Area Food Bank.
