McCoy's Heisman Hopes End

Sophomore running back Mark Ingram became the first-ever Heisman Trophy winner from Alabama during the announcement ceremony Saturday night in New York at the Nokia Center, as runner-up Toby Gerhart of Stanford came in just 28 points behind in the balloting.

Texas Longhorns senior quarterback Colt McCoy was just 131 points behind Gerhart. McCoy was last year's Heisman runner-up.

According to the Dallas Morning News, this year's Heisman contest was closer than ever before. Mark Ingram was on 68 percent of the ballots, Gerhart 67 percent, McCoy 61 percent, Nebraska's Ndamukong Suh 43 percent and Florida's Tim Tebow (who won as a sophomore two years ago) 26 percent.

McCoy told Inside Texas, "I obviously wanted to win and take it back to my teammates, but the other candidates are all very well respected and could have all won."

Although McCoy will not be taking home the Heisman, he is walking away with several national awards. He is now a two-time winner of both the Davey O'Brien award for the nation's top quarterback, as well as the Walter Camp Football Foundation National Player of the Year, according to Inside Texas. He also won the 2009 Maxwell Award and the Jimmy Unitas Golden Arm Award.

After the Texas/Texas A&M game on Thanksgiving Day, many sports critics named McCoy as the front runner for the Heisman. The senior Texas quarterback had the national stage to himself, and dominated the game, becoming the first Longhorn to pass for 300 yards in a single game. But Inside Texas says the last second win against Nebraska opened the door to Gerhert and Ingram's possibilities of taking home the Heisman.

Tebow's vote, which he would not reveal, seemed an obvious one for McCoy. "I would have liked for him to have finished out his career with a Heisman. I rooted for him," Tebow said. "We talked afterwards. He'll just use it as motivation to go win the national championship which is an even bigger deal."

McCoy and Ingram, who will meet again in uniform this time, on January 7th when Alabama and Texas face off in the BCS Championship Game at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Calif.
