A day of mourning

Yesterday, Thursday, November 5, a mass murder happened on the post at Fort Hood, Texas. It is the largest military installation where more than 50,000 active military duty soldiers are stationed. I've heard 1 in 10 soliders is stationed at Fort Hood.

It's not surprising that this shooting, which killed 13 people and wounded more than 30, is impacting the entire country and those overseas. The suspected killer is Major Malik Nadal Hasan, a psychologist who treated soldiers with PTSD, post traumatic stress disorder. Preliminary reports say Maj. Hasan, who had listened to horrifying stories from soldiers returning from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, was set to deploy himself. The motive for his actions may have been the stress he felt about his future deployment, and that the man with ties to the Muslim world, would have to face off against Muslim people overseas.

I will be heading to Killeen today, where Fort Hood is located. While the tragedy has many folks in disbelief and shock a day after the horrifying ordeal, we will try to find stories of courage and triumph, and hear from people trying to make sense of it all.
