All Four One and One Four All

Four years ago today, I woke up to a flurry of activity in preparation for the 4 p.m. wedding Sarah and I spent more than a year planning.  The day set itself into motion, and it doesn't seem like it ever stopped!  There is always something going on with these two people, two dogs, and now, in this fourth year, we've added another number to this family: one child.

The fourth wedding anniversary is "flowers and fruit" to symbolize the budding relationship of the marriage.  I think you could say that about any year of a marriage.  It's always changing and evolving.  I know this one is.

Coincidentally, the symbol at our wedding was a flower, which you can see in the picture.  We had to have some sort of picture projected on the screen at the chapel, so we used the picture from our invitations.
The memory that keeps popping in my mind is the U2 song "It's a Beautiful Day" that escorted us into the reception hall following the wonderful ceremony in the Chapel of the Abiding Presence at Texas Lutheran University.  Sarah has taught me that it is indeed a beautiful day no matter if the day is ugly or depressing.

Make no mistake, this marriage, like any marriage, is not perfect.  But I think the true testament is how we get through things.  We have goals... one we just made this week to watch more movies!  We have dreams... maybe another kiddo?  We have fears... a mortgage on a house in a city we don't even live in.  We have questions... what does the future hold?  We have Saturdays... let's go try that restaurant we've never been to.  And among all of these things, we have each other to encompass all of those other states of human existence.

Thank you for being my rock, Sarah.  Thank you for our son, Luke, who is as precious as the day is long.

Thank you for your friendship, and thank you for your unwavering faith in me... and in us.

Happy Anniversary.
