UT Class of 2010 Faces Challenges

The University of Texas Class of 2010 has walked the stage, and with them go about 7,800 unique students, their stories and their struggles.

UT Graduation was held Saturday, May 22 for both undergrad and graduate students, who heard actress Marcia Gay Harden deliver the commencement address. The ceremony capped off several days of celebrations by individual departments, honoring their graduates.

The grads will face a tough job market, with Texas' unemployment rate remaining high at 8.3%. Not only that, but most graduates leave school with what can be a crushing load of student loan debt hanging over their heads before they even land that first job.

That's not stopping Martin Kareithi, who graduated yesterday with a Master's degree in Public Affairs from the LBJ School at UT. Kareithi, who has been blind since he was injured in a car accident nine years ago, has already put his skills to work making many of the buildings on the UT campus accessible to those who are sight-impaired, helping the administration re-label rooms with Braille signage.
