Ready, Set, Google!

The application is set and now Austin must now wait to see if it gets selected for Google's Fiber for Communities honor.

Friday, city leaders said it's official with the application submission and confirmation from the internet search giant itself that it received Austin's bid.  Councilperson Laura Morrison said the application and the support from people all over town may propel Austin into the spotlight.

"The city’s application, coupled with tremendous community support, is an impressive piece of work," Morrison said.  "Regardless of future outcomes, it has been an incredible collaborative effort that we should all be proud of."

People may have done their part, but the creators of BigGigAustin.org and DearGoogle.BigGigAustin.org helped promote the nomination process.  Social media sites like Facebook also invited thousands of people to participate in nominating Austin.

Morrison thanked city staff who worked on the official application.  "Our city staff... worked tirelessly to produce an extremely polished formal application with creative avenues in which to present it to Google.  Congratulations on a job well done!" she said.
