The ballot has been set for the governor's race in November. Incumbent Gov. Rick Perry will face a challenge from former Houston mayor Bill White after each secured their party's nomination for the office in Tuesday's primary election.
White pulled way ahead with only the early votes tallied, and with just 4% of precincts reporting, the Associated Press called the Democratic race for White around 8 p.m. White addressed his supporters at the Intercontinental Hotel in Houston and immediately went after Perry in his speech, reaching out to Independents and Republicans who voted for one of Perry's challengers.
Gov. Perry dominated the late newscasts with his well-timed acceptance speech just after 10 p.m. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison conceded the race a little before 9:30 p.m., calling Perry to congratulate him. Perry claimed the election returns as a mandate for a return to conservatism, comparing Tuesday's primary to the election of Scott Brown to the U.S. Senate seat formerly held by Ted Kennedy in Massachusetts.
