McHugh Elected First Woman to Chair UT Board of Regents

Colleen McHugh has been elected as the University of Texas System Board's first chairwoman.

McHugh was appointed as a regent in 2005 by Gov. Rick Perry.  She was chosen unanimously by her fellow regents Wednesday to lead the board as it faces criticism over recent budget-balancing decisions.

"I know the board is committed to following through on the initiatives begun during the last several years and reaffirming its shared commitment to transparency and excellence," McHugh said in a statement. "Our work remains unchanged: ensuring that the University of Texas System serves our students, the people of Texas and the nation well."

McHugh, 63, is an attorney and hospital executive who hails from Corpus Christi.  She was formerly the vice chairwoman of the board, and her term as a regent expires February 1, 2011.

At their meeting Wednesday, the UT System Board also approved a tuition hike for UT-Austin of 5.4% for Fall 2010 and almost 3.9% for 2011-2012.
