Chief Acevedo Among Dallas Police Chief Candidates

Austin Police Chief Art Acevedo is among the finalists for the new Dallas chief of police, according to a memo released by the City of Dallas.

Acevedo told the Austin American-Statesman that he feels it's important to keep his options open.  He also said that he isn't dissatisfied with his job, but that most police chiefs have an average tenure of three to five years.  He has served as the APD chief since July 2007, and is Austin's eighth police chief.  He is also the city's first Hispanic police chief, and is the president of the National Latino Police Officers Association.

Acevedo's name was released today as a finalist for the job in a memo by Dallas City Manager Mary Kuhn, along with David O. Brown, the first assistant chief for the Dallas Police Department; Robert L. Davis, the chief of police in San Jose, California; Daniel V. Garcia, assistant chief for the Dallas Police Department; Floyd D. Simpson, assistant chief for the Dallas Police Department; Robert Crump White, police chief for the Louisville Metro Police Department in Kentucky.

Dallas Police Chief Ray Kunkle announced in November of last year that he would retire after 38 years with the Dallas Police Department.
