Joseph Andrew Stack was apparently behind the plane crash and a devastating house fire at his home near Parmer and Metric, in the Scofield Farms subdivision.
The fire started around 9:00 this morning at the home, which was destroyed. From there, Stack apparently drove his car to the Georgetown Airport, where he took off in a plane listed by the FAA as registered in his name. Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Lynn Lunsford says the pilot didn't file a flight plan.
The plane crash happened just before 10:00am at the Echelon business complex near the intersection of Highways 183 and 360. The crash threw black smoke into the air and snagged traffic. The plane apparently flew into a breakroom, which was empty at the time.
Remarkably, only two people from the crash suffered injuries serious enough to require hospitalization. They were taken to University Medical Center-Brackenridge, with one of the injured later transported to Brooke Army Medical Center's burn unit in San Antonio. Officials credit regular drills and a calm evacuation with the low number of injuries.
The building where the crash happened houses the Austin-area IRS offices. Stack left a long note on the website of his business, Embedded Art, ranting against the IRS and the government at large. The note was later removed by the website host, citing a request from the FBI. It has since been posted at The Smoking Gun.
President Barack Obama and Governor Rick Perry have been briefed on the incident and an investigation is underway by several federal organizations.
