The anniversary of the assassination of JFK

Where were you? I always remember my parents or teachers telling stories of where they were when JFK was killed.

You can't blame me for not being born yet. Often times I get scolded for being too young. But who doesn't have a memory of JFK, whether you were alive or not even a twinkle in someone's eye? I was always fascinated with JFK's commitment to the space program. I am taken with the stature of a man he was, and the wisdom he seemed to possess. Just like the booming voices of strong men like Barack Obama, Kennedy had the presence.

This year, we lost Walter Cronkite. I repeatedly saw the clip of him anchoring the news the afternoon Kennedy was shot. He had to deliver the fateful news that eventually went down in history: the assassination of the 35th President of the United States of America. Even a man like Mr. Cronkite could not keep himself composed.

Last week I covered the funeral of a former Austin mayor, Roy Butler. One of his best friends, Ralph Wayne, told me he hasn't seen another man of Butler's magnitude, and said we may never again see that kind of man. It seems these historic, larger than life figures like Kennedy, are never going to be seen again. Maybe they will, but could it be in our lifetime?

Where were you when you heard the news that JFK was killed?
